Foot pain may be caused by many different conditions or injuries, such as sudden or repeated trauma or disease.

Poor biomechanical alignment may lead to foot pain. Wearing shoes that are too tight or high heels can cause pain around the balls of the feet and the bones in that area. Shoes that are tied too tightly may cause pain and bruising on the top of the foot.


This is a condition resulting in pain in the ball of the foot, usually as a result of footwear. The bones at the base of the toes become inflamed and painful, especially when walking, causing a burning sensation. Wearing high heels or shoes that are too tight will aggravate this. Sometimes a callous develops on the skin in the centre of the foot.


Bunions are a common problem that most people experience as a bony protuberance at the base of the big toe. (The “bump” on the side of the big toe- or in some cases, also the little toe) A bunion, however, is more complicated than simply a bump on the foot. When a patient has a bunion, the big toe angles in toward the other toes, a condition called hallux valgus.

Bunions are common in women, most often due to unsuitable footwear. They may also be as a result of collapsed arches and feet that are too flexible. Wearing the incorrect footwear aggravates bunions. Bunions are a common problem that can cause foot pain and difficulty with wearing certain types of shoes. Having large bunions makes it difficult to fit into narrow shoes, and if you do squeeze your feet into these, it will make the bunions red, inflamed and painful. The “bump” becomes larger and the problem continues to get worse. As the big toe becomes more and more angled (pointing toward the other toes), the base of the toe becomes more and more prominent, forming the bunion. The bunion forms in part because of the new angle of the toe, and in part due to inflammation over the bunion surface The big toe may eventually come to lie over, or more commonly under, the second toe. This may cause further irritation while wearing shoes and more pain. Bunions can be helped by wearing the appropriate footwear for your foot type.
